Which public and private organisations, programmes, projects or networks outside Germany promote the development of teaching in higher education and innovation in teaching and learning? The CHE Centre for Higher Education was commissioned by Stiftung Innovationen in der Hochschullehre (StIL) to address this issue. The results of the international search are now available as a publication.

Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre (StIL), run by Toepfer Stiftung gGmbH, has been in existence since 2020. It was established by the federal and state governments as an organisation with the aim of sustainably promoting the capacity for innovation in university teaching.

A review conducted by CHE on behalf of StIL now provides the first overview of organisations similar to StIL in an international context. Between October 2022 and February 2023, CHE’s Gero Federkeil and Caroline Friedhoff, together with an international network of experts, identified potentially interesting programmes and alliances to link the foundation’s work internationally.

Further research and interviews led to an overview of 43 organisations in 17 countries that support projects and initiatives to promote innovation in teaching and learning. Examples include the Office for Students in England, the Dutch Comenius programme and the Forum Neue Medien in der Lehre Austria.

StIL has now published the profiles of all the organisations, together with further information on their form of organisation, governance, objective of the support, funding amount and key areas of support, in the publication “International review of the promotion of teaching and learning in higher education”.

“The review shows that organisations promoting innovation in teaching and learning are very heterogeneous in terms of their relationship with the state, their organisation, their size and level of funding, and their thematic focus,” commented Dr Antje Mansbrügge, Innovation Director of Stiftung Innovation in der Hochschullehre. “With regard to these aspects, the profile of StIL puts it in a special position internationally.”

The publication “International review of the enhancement of teaching and learning in higher education” is available online from the StIL website as a free e-paper. The publication was written by Gero Federkeil, Caroline Friedhoff and Julie Maier from the CHE Centre for Higher Education.
