The not-for-profit CHE Centre
for Higher Education was founded in 1994 on the initiative of Reinhard Mohn and Professor Dr. Hans-Uwe Erichsen, former president of the
German Rectors' Conference. Since then the CHE shareholders have been the Bertelsmann Foundation and the German Rectors' Conference
Foundation. Long-standing managing director Professor Dr. Detlef Müller-Böling handed over management of the CHE to Dr. Jörg Dräger and
Professor Dr. Frank Ziegele in August 2008.
The CHE decides about
its areas of specialisation and projects independently and without instruction. It has a total annual budget of around 4.5 million euros, one third
of which is financed by the Bertelsmann Foundation.
CHE is committed to achieving a highly effective
higher education system that is fair for all. In view of the unstoppable tendency of higher education being normality, CHE is particularly
dedicated to ensuring that higher education institutions are in a position to cope with the growing student population as well as with the
increasing diversity of their students. Higher education and research institutions should use and shape their autonomy, develop and
implement diverse profiles, and assume their social responsibility.
